2014 World Cup Brazil
Although FIFA was founded in 1904, the first world cup was not held until 1930 in Uruguay. However, the first official soccer match between representativesof two nations was held in 1872 between Scotland and England.
On July 13, 1930, France defeated Mexico 4-1 and the United States defeated Belgium 3-0 in the first-ever World Cup football matches, played simultaneously in host city Montevideo, Uruguay. The World Cup has since become the world’s most watched sporting event.

New for 2014 World Cup
Goal-line Technology: Goal line technology awards France a goal against Honduras. It is still new, but it appears to offest guess work on the part of the referee.
In the first part of the video, it appears that the keeper made the save. Electronic review proved otherwise.
Keepers will probably not like goal line technology as it takes away some of their gamesmanship.

Spray paint: No, the World Cup refs aren't wannabe graffiti artists. For the first time, FIFA referees are using the special spray to paint a temporary white line 10 yards from the free kick spot, marking the safe area into which opposing players cannot encroach.
The spray disappears after one minute. This, although somewhat awkward to watch, addresses a problem for referees and players alike: Although they're supposed to remain 10 yards away, opposing players have frequently crept closer to the free-kick taker in an effort to disrupt the kick, starting countless arguments about fairness.

World Cup Venues
There are twelve Football World Cup Venues scattered throughout Brazil. There is diversity in the
weather that teams will face in the World Cup, with the relatively cooler
locations in the south and along the coast (Rio de Janeiro). only Curitiba
averages less than 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Porto Alegre, the southernmost venue,
comes in at 71 degrees.
At the opposite end, Natal is the warmest venue on average (93 degrees), but the humidity in inland cities like Manaus will probably make things even more difficult. All told, 7 of the 12 cities hosting the Group Stages have an average temperature of 85 degrees or warmer over the next ten days. Spain, the reigning champs, joins France as the only two teams that do not play in one of those warmer cities. Both venture north to Salvador, which has more moderate temperatures along the Atlantic, but get all of their games along the coast.
In contrast, Cameroon, Greece, Ghana, England, Colombia, Uruguay, and hosts Brazil all play their games in those 7 “warmer” cities and will have to consistently battle the heat.
Here’s a summary of the total round trip travel distances from nearest major city to each team’s home base and all three matches, as well as the average daily high temperature in the cities where each team will play.
The United States has the longest total travel distance. Ghana, one of their opponents in Group G, has the shortest.
How can the the players, coming in after long grueling seasons, perform at their best with long travel schedules and high heat and humidity?

Two Year Qualifying Process
The World Cup, which is the most watched sporting event in the world, occurs every four years. However, they are preceeded by two years of qualifying rounds, which have an excitment all their own.
Quality of Play
World Cup's are very exciting soccer to watch. However, it is not soccer at the very high level of league play experienced in many countries, particularly Europe.
Each countries fields a team of all-stars who practice for about a month leading into the World Cup. During the two year qualification process, Team line-ups vary from game to game. Throughout the long August to May league seasons, most national team members play in foreign leagues.
In addition to grueling league schedules, normally about 38 games, they could aslso play additional games, some times two or three a week. Most countries have a FA tournament of teams from all leagues. The top four teams in the top divisions from the previous season play in international tournaments.
Therefore, many players come to the World Cup extremely tired, with some nursing injuries.
