Ancient Beginnings
Chinese played “football” games 3000 years ago. •Ancient Greeks and Romans used football games to sharpen warriors for battle. •Japanese, Italian, Persian, Viking and many more played long before.
Modern Times
ENGLAND—This is where it took place starting in 1863. Association football and rugby football split into different directions. –October 1863. Eleven London clubs and schools met at Freemason’s Tavern to clarify rules concerning tripping, shin-kicking and carrying the ball. –December 1863. Rugby die-hards left and The Football Association was born. –1871 Football Association (FA) had 50 members. First competition, the FA Cup, which preceded the League Championship by 17 years. –1872. First international match between England and Scotland.
Question of professionalism. 1879—Amateur team players began to receive pay for their talents.

History of US Soccer
Soccer has received considerable attention the last 15 to 20 years as a result of the 1999 and 2011 Women's World Cup, the men's national team's continuing presence the the Men's World Cup and the explosion of both boy's and girl's youth soccer programs.

U.S. Soccer Celebrates 100 Years
